Businesses are racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight the challenge of final mile delivery continues to be a massive pain point for you work in the transportation and logistics industry? Get business insights on the latest tech innovations, market trends, and your competitors with data-driven research. As consumers increasingly turn to ecommerce for all their shopping needs, speedy fulfillment and distribution isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s the expectation of every online shopping experience. And if logistics companies and their retail partners want a shot at thwarting the ever-looming threat of Amazon Prime, it needs to be a priority. As a result, businesses have begun racing to develop new technologies and experimental supply chain models to increase parcel volume, expedite deliveries, and delight customers — all while trying to cut costs. Unfortunately, one of their biggest expenses and challenges is same-day, final mile delivery. What is last mile delivery? In a product’s journey from warehouse shelf, to the back of a truck, to a customer doorstep, the “last mile” of delivery is the final step of the process — the point at which the package finally arrives at the buyer’s door. In addition to being a key to customer satisfaction, last mile delivery is both the most expensive and time-consuming part of the shipping process. What is the last mile problem? If you’ve ever tracked a package in real time online and saw that it was “out for delivery” for what felt like forever, you already understand that the last mile problem is inefficiency. That’s because the final leg of shipment typically involves multiple stops with low drop sizes. In rural areas, delivery points along a particular route could be several miles apart, with only one or two packages getting dropped off at each one. In cities, the outlook isn’t much better; what urban areas make up for in stop proximity is quickly negated by the near constant delays of traffic congestion. The costs and inefficiencies of the last mile problem have only been further compounded by the continuous rise of ecommerce in US retail sales, which has dramatically increased the number of parcels delivered each day, as well as raised customer expectations to include not just fast, but also free, delivery. What are the costs of last mile delivery? As a share of the total cost of shipping, last mile delivery costs are substantial—comprising 53% overall. And with the growing ubiquitousness of “free shipping,” customers are less willing to foot a delivery fee, forcing retailers and logistics partners to shoulder the cost. As such, it’s become the first place they’re looking to implement new technologies and drive process improvements. Like what you’re reading? Technology solutions to improve last mile logistics With the rise of the gig economy, many consumers are already familiar with the concept of crowdsourcing local services through digital platforms like Uber, Airbnb, and Postmates. Location-based crowdsourcing allows consumers to open a mobile app to hail a ride, book a place to stay, order coffee to the office, hire a handyman to mount a TV, send flowers to that special someone, or even schedule takeout to arrive just as they’re walking through their apartment door. Postmates Rafael Henrique/SOPA The crowdsourcing model has been prevalent in transportation, hospitality, and food delivery for some time now, and retailers are eyeing its low startup costs, asset-light operations, and improved customer experience to ease their last mile delivery woes. With crowdsource technology, retailers, logistics partners, and consumers can connect directly with local, non-professional couriers who use their own transportation to make deliveries. Companies can get their online orders to customers faster, and customers can get their items when and where they want them. The freedom to make on-demand and scheduled deliveries also ensures that customers are home at the time of delivery—eliminating the need for a second or third attempt. And with the ongoing integration and enhancement of automation across industries, it’s likely we’ll start seeing delivery robots, drones, and self-driving vehicles making many of these drop-offs in the not-so-far future. You’ll get to a spot where you’ll leave your horses. Follow her and have a chat as you look at the view. Exit through the crack in the wall but before following Dina to the next area entirely, consider looting the nearby room for supplies. Supplies Crouch through the spare room to the right of the horses but the left of the huge hole in the wall with barbed wire. In the back is a locker with some ammo inside. Follow Dina crouch through the gap, and take the rope up top. She’ll ask you to sign the two of you in. Supplies The room on the right has a bong in it to the right of the sofa. Interact with it for some extra dialogue. There’s also some scraps you can later use to upgrade weapons on the filing cabinet. In the main room, check the desk drawer for ammo. Follow Dina and you’ll see an open notebook on the table where you can sign in. Abandoned Town Follow Dina again on horseback and you’ll reach the next town. You can stop and inspect all the buildings for supplies and collectibles. Supplies Supplements and scrap in the trailer. Supplements, scrap, ammo, trading card on the 2nd floor of the house ahead details below. An artifact in a blown out building details below. Explore the Infected Stores A bloody moose ahead is your clue that infected are nearby. Follow the trail of blood, leading into the window opening, to find your first one. Take cover and use hearing/camera rotation to get a visual on the Runner. It’ll be feasting so sneak up behind it and take it down. Supplies Approach the white door ahead but turn right, so your back is towards it. Ahead is a locked blue door. You can get inside it by going through the window and moving forward towards the trash. On the right is a window you can climb through to enter that bathroom. There, you’ll find ammo and several supplements in the sink. Then just exit through the blue door you can unlock it since you’re in the bathroom. Continue forward and open the white door by holding triangle. Follow the on-screen prompts to execute a quick throw and stab the enemy. Supplies On your right you’ll find some scraps on the table. Check the drawers, behind the cash register, for scrap. Keep going by moving to the right where Dina is and climbing through the window with the streak of blood underneath. You’ll reach a runner infected area. Use the cars for company cover. Take one down and Dina will take out the other. There are more runners inside the store. You’ll need to clear out that area. Tips Enter on the left side, by the dumpster. Take down that runner and then enter the store to take down the 2 remaining runners. Keep a bottle or brick in hand, use them as a quick throw attack if your cover is ever blown. Use your hearing often, this early on in the game it’s not as strong so you’ll see more and more clearly the closer you get. Once the room is clear follow Dina through the sizable gap in the wall leading to the postal truck. Walk up to the truck by Dina and interact with it to give Dina a boost to the top. Then take her hand to climb up yourself. Jump down from the truck and walk towards the Greenplace Market semi-truck. Hold circle to get into prone position to crawl under the truck and continue ahead. Be ready because an enemy lies ahead. Climb up to the top of the blue, truck tractor where the driver’s seat is located and then turn around and do a running jump to reach the white semi-trailer. Continue forward to the hole in the bricks leading to the next area. Supermarket Offices and Pharmacy When you drop down you’ll find yourself in a conference room. Health Kit Recipe Location Loot the room. One of the metal cabinet drawers has ammo and the cabinets under the TV stand have alcohol and some rags which allow you to unlock the Health Kit Recipe. Dina will move the cart blocking the door and the two of you will enter a Spore infected area. Immediately go left to loot the side room for supplies. When you’re ready, continue to the right and you’ll end up in a breakroom area with a door leading to a back office. Loot the kitchen area and lockers before slipping through the crevice ahead. Clickers in the Pharmacy Be ready to take down to clickers. Tips Use stealth to take down the Clickers. Approach slowly because if they can hear you, they’ll know your location. They’re blind otherwise. Despite being blind a Clicker’s scream can also help them detect your location so keep a safe distance until you’re ready to approach them from behind. Keep a bottle/brick in hand because you can use it to do a quick throw to stun and stab the Clickers. The Clickers and infected in general cannot detect your flashlight so feel free to keep it on. If the Clickers spot you consider dodging and running to get some distance. Dina will fire some shots too so you can let her take care of it or draw your gun and fire yourself. Molotov Cocktail Recipe Location Once they’re dead help Dina move the cabinet from the door by holding down triangle once you’re inside she’ll hand you a little present in the form of a Molotov Cocktail because she gets you. Loot this room as it’s full of supplies, including lots of supplements. Exit by climbing up the cabinet to the window above. Infected Super Market This next room has several runners and clickers. Tips Take out the Runners first. Keep in mind that the Runner screams can alert the Clickers but killing the Clickers, out in the open, may make the Runners spot you. Be mindful of the area. Molotov’s are very effective against infected but remember the sound of them crashing and burning will alert others. Clickers are most prone to running into the flames since they’re most drawn to noise. Walk to the exit and interact with the door. It’s locked so head to the right and pick up the rope. Throw it over the exposed vent and throw the rope over my aiming with L2 and throwing with R2. Follow Dina’s lead and jump and slide down to head for your horses and follow Dina on horseback again. At one point you lose Dina but keep moving forward and eventually you’ll hear Dina calling for you. Follow her voice and keep going. You’ll take shelter from the storm in a library. Explore the Library The copy center is locked but you can break the glass window by using a brick, a bottle, or a melee attack. Jump through the window and move to the next door. Loot the room for scraps. When you’re ready, continue to the next door. You’ll automatically pick up the collectible hanging on the corkboard. Return to the children’s library, Dina will remark that there’s something underground. Keep walking until you’re in the tiny hallway between the copy center and the children’s library. Turn to the bookshelf and move it with Dina’s help. Continue downstairs and see what Eugene has been hiding. The Last of Us 2 Guide All Collectibles The Last of Us 2 has an incredible 266 collectibles for you to find. You can view any collectibles you've discovered by pushing the touchpad when you're in-game, and using the R1 button to browse to the collectibles sub-section. Artefacts are generally written notes and other pieces of lore-related ephemera you'll find in the world. They're typically represented by an icon showing a sheet of paper, signifying that they can be collected. Trading Cards function similarly to Artefacts, though they have their own symbol within the world and are categorised separately in Ellie's backpack. They are Ellie's main form of collectible. Coins are similar to Trading Cards, however they represent Abby's primary form of collectible. They're represented in the world by two overlapping pennies. Journal Entries are generally added automatically to Ellie's notepad, however there are a handful of moments where you'll need to interact with parts of the world in order to ensure she scribbles her thoughts down. These are considered one of the game's collectible types. Workbenches are where you can upgrade your weapons using spare parts that you scavenge from the world. You simply need to look at these in order to "collect" them, however we recommend interacting with them just to ensure they get added to your checklist. You're also probably going to want to upgrade your weapons each time you find one anyway. Safes are storage units that contain key valuable items, but you'll need to know the correct safe code combination in order to open them. Typically, the clues are written in Artefacts that you'll find nearby, but be prepared to use both the environment and your ol' grey matter in order to solve the puzzles. The Last of Us 2 has a total of 11 acts, divided into 45 chapters, although not all of them have collectbiles in them. Below you'll find guides to all The Last of Us 2's collectibles in the order that you'll discover them in the game. The Last of Us 2 FAQ - Everything You Need to Know The Last of Us 2 Full Story Recap The Last of Us 2 Guide Tips and Tricks for Beginners The Last of Us 2’s wide-array of difficulty options mean you shouldn’t have too much trouble finishing the game, regardless of your ability. However, there are some universal tips and tricks that we’d recommend to all players. Read through these carefully to ensure you’re prepared. Always Reload and Craft During Downtime You should endeavour to reload and craft any materials during moments of downtime, as these will ensure you’re always prepared for conflict. There are moments during The Last of Us 2 where you’ll be ambushed by Clickers or rival factions, and sometimes these encounters can catch you off guard. Keep your weapon magazines as full as possible and your backpack well supplied with key items, such as health packs and explosives. You’ll regret not utilising these periods of peace effectively if you don’t. Never Face Danger Head On Under no circumstances should you ever run towards danger, as you’ll be taken out immediately. Rival humans’ aim will improve when you run towards them, and the stopping power of their weapons means you’ll struggle to make meaningful progress anyway. It’s better to run away from potential conflict; use stealth to get the jump on your enemies, saving valuable resources and utilising the element of surprise to your advantage. Ensure you’re always moving, but try to attack enemies from behind or from the side. Similar rules apply to Clickers, although discretion should be your main focus when fighting the infected, so try to restrict the use of your firearms to emergencies only – at least until you’ve thinned their numbers. Crouch to Dampen Your Footsteps If you want to remain quiet, then you’re going to want to crouch as much as possible. Delicately pushing the thumb stick while in a crunched position will ensure you’re virtually silent, but remember you can also go prone if you need to hide either under cars or in tall grass. Remember, concealing yourself in foliage doesn’t make you invincible like in other games, but you’re much more difficult to spot and this can buy you time if you need to use health kits or take a breather for a few minutes. Use Distractions to Your Advantage Bottles and bricks are great for smashing glass and stunning enemies, but they can also be used to push and pull enemies around. Use these items to create distractions and diversions, or lure infected into areas where there are human foes. If you can successfully pit Clickers against gun-wielding gangs, then you can significantly thin their numbers, reducing the amount of resources you’ll require to finish them off entirely. You Don’t Always Have to Engage Fighting is fun albeit harrowing in The Last of Us 2, but one tip is that you don’t always have to attack. If your resources are low and your energy levels are depleted, consider using stealth to slip past your enemies undetected. While there are some encounters where you’ll have no option but to fight, many others can be approached completely clandestine, and if you’re successful you’ll never have to use a single bullet. If you struggle at stealth then remember that you can craft silencers for your pistols, allowing you to pick off select enemies without attracting any attention. A Collectibles Tracker Can Be Enabled If you’re playing through The Last of Us 2 on New Game + and you’re searching for any outstanding collectibles, it’s worth switching on the Collectibles Tracker in the Settings menu. This allows you to keep track of which collectibles you’ve found in previous runs, so you know which ones you need in order to unlock that all-important Platinum Trophy. And that brings our The Last of Us 2 guide to a conclusion. Hopefully, this has helped you to get the most out of Naughty Dog’s touching post-apocalyptic tale. If you have any further tips and tricks to share, please post them in the comments section below. Home Gaming News Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann Says There is 'No One Solution' to Crunch Naughty Dog co-presidents Neil Druckmann and Evan Wells discuss the studio’s battle with crunch culture, rejecting a 'silver bullet' solution. Crunch-time is practically the industry standard in game development. It’s a problem that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how much attention it gets. Last year reports emerged that Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2 saw an intense crunch period despite its delayed release. Naughty Dog's co-president Neil Druckmann commented on the issues during one recent interview. However, he acknledged the problem but rejected the notion of a simple solution. Druckmann and and fellow co-president Evan Wells made ther remaks during an interview with Ben Reeves from Game Informer. The conversation covered a range of topics before eventually landing on the question of crunch time. Wells and Druckmann discussed various steps the studio is taking. These included taking on additional management to ensure current Naughty Dog projects are progressing smoothly. The studio is also working on creating more opportunities for employee feedback. Druckmann also explained that Naughty Dog’s leadership is also working harder to watch how employees handle stress and the workload. Reeves then asked about unionization, an often-suggested answer to the problem of AAA crunch time. Wells and Druckmann largely dismissed the idea, expressing skepticism of unionization as a solution. As Druckmann explained, Naughty Dog has attempted in the past to create policies that prevented crunch. However, he argued these sorts of companywide changes inevitably lead to unforeseen complications. Druckmann gave the example of Naughty Dog not letting developers work on Sundays, only for staff to complain that it disrupts their established schedules. He argued that situations like that are why Naughty Dog can’t just end crunch with a single policy change. “We find that there is no one solution that fits everybody,” Says Druckmann. “Everybody has a unique situation we might need to address.” Responses to Wells’ and Druckmann’s statements have seen mixed reactions. Some, like Fanbyte contributor Kenneth Shepard, criticized the answers as “wishy-washy.” Shepard also rejected a claim from Wells that Naughty Dog could not simply implement a 40-hour workweek, pointing out that it is standard practice in many other industries. However, others, such as Naughty Dog environmental artist Anthony Vaccaro pushed back, defending the company’s efforts at reducung Naughty Dog's overreliance on crunch time. Regardless, crunch culture has been a real issue with AAA developers for some time. Ubisoft, BioWare, Rockstar, and CD Project Red have faced similar criticisms for relying on crunch time to hit unrealistic deadlines. It seems only time will tell if Naughty Dog produces real solutions to the rampant overwork of game developers.
